Now Available: Commenting with OpenID

OpenID is an open, decentralized standard for user authentication and access control, allowing users to log onto many services with the same digital identity.

Similar to our support for Facebook Connect, & Twitter Sign-in. OpenID makes it easier and quicker for people to jump into a discussion. To enable Open ID, publishers should proceed to Admin/Settings and enable the feature under Options.

For commenters, just look for the OpenID Sign-in button on sites that have this enabled.

Cheers,

Giannii

  • I've tried using myOpenID and Google's OpenID provider, but the profile picture is always the generic Disqus "ambivalent face." If I understand OpenID Attribute Exchange correctly, Disqus should be getting profile information from the provider. Are you deliberately not using the profile picture, or is something else going on?

Incidentally I also tried the twitter login, with the same generic "ambivalent face" picture. That is even more perplexing as twitter's profile pictures are at well-known URLs for a given twitter ID.
  • Which Google OpenID? Blogger?
  • I've now tried using Google Blogger's OpenID and MyOpenID. In neither case did I my profile picture (from the OpenID provider) show up next to my Disqus comment. I got the generic ambivalent-guy avatar. I also tried using my twitter login once, and did not get my twitter picture either.

In all cases the URL link worked correctly. When using blogger's OpenID, it linked to my blog. With MyOpenID it linked to my MyOpenID profile, and with twitter to my twitter page.
  • works with yahoo.com as OpenID URL.
  • Good work buddy

  • I'm hoping to get something straightened out. Will we be able to harmonize our Disqus and OpenID accounts (ie claim an OpenID using Disqus?) I really like Disqus and am trying to get some blogs that I help run to use it. The situation is this: the blogs right now are run on blogger software, and so commenters are very much a Blogger community. My hope is that by using Disqus, it opens it up more to other users. However, in implementing Disqus I fear I may be alienating the Blogger users. They can, of course, register with Disqus but are hesitant to do so, and would prefer to use their Blogger OpenIDs.

As it stands, they can comment using the blogger OpenID, but then this creates a situation where rather than having an avatar and a link to their blogger profile in the comments section, they get a standard OpenID icon AND they get the automatically created DISQUS profile (such as openid-9384) or whatever over which they have no control. I tried creating Disqus profiles for the regular users using OpenID so they would at least be able to control it if they wanted, but was unable to create a new account using OpenID-- I can use OpenID to comment, but not to create (and customize/control) a Disqus profile. Is this the same bug you mentioned earlier, or can you really not create a new profile using your open id?

I have hopes for Disqus, and giving control of OpenID Disqus accounts to the OpenID users would be enough to have me fully support it. HARMONIZING (ie. linking your Disqus account to your OpenID-- and your Facebook and Twitter!) so that no matter how you commented (Facebook, Twitter, OpenID, or Disqus) they would all go into a single Disqus people profile-- would make me want force everyone to use it.
  • Sure I'm glad! Your dog will die by infarct (cardio-brething stop);
It's very good to have people around for find out some more; but, remember, in cyber, old school it's most efficient; see CyberArmy from Edinburgh University, explaine me fair'n'square, what nasty work was to make things seems to be complicated; was my oppinion too; P.C. it's a more thin buldoser, that's all; but what I did in May?
In May I stayed in the jail-security "grow in the forest, I" maximus, a week without any object; Inverse psychology, just to confess; all was politic
  • Yeah, we're planning on having an option to merge all the account types. =)

  • Now all we need is Friend Connect support and syncing comments with Blogger.
  • I like it, keep the services coming for DISQUS
  • This is a great addition to an already fantastic service.

    Thanks
  • Great work guys , Just implement the new changes to my blog
  • Very impressed, you guys are doing great work. I hope you get adopted by a lot more blogs.
  • Very impressed with your work!
  • Awesome!
  • This will be a very useful feature indeed.

Curious though, is everything working as expected with the authentication mechanisms? I only ask because I enabled OpenID as indicated in this post, but trying to use it fails.

    For example:

    1) When I was already logged into my Disqus account, trying to comment with my OpenID would result in what looks like an internal server error (... "That's not supposed to happen" ..., 500)...

    2) When I logged out of my Disqus account, the 500 error went away, but it still shows me commenting as a guest.

    3) In both cases, my OpenID provider shows "Approve for http://disqus.com/".

    ...
So, either I simply do not understand how it is supposed to work... Or it actually is not working. Hints, suggestions, etc? I'd like to enable this, but does it have problems?
  • Anton Kovalyov
Have you seen the OpenID button while being logged in as a DISQUS user? (I am asking because that was not supposed to happen)
  • Yes, I do see the OpenID button even though I am logged into my account via OpenID. I just tried to log in via my username and password, and it failed for some reason. I'm sure I was typing everything correctly though...
  • Yup, my Disqus login (i.e., username/password) is not working...
  • Anton Kovalyov
Could you send me (anton@disqus.com) your username and a screenshot of the your 'Post a comment' area? Thanks.
  • Yes, I sent it just now.
  • I sent you an email.

@disqus great feature, but I'm having trouble with the openid login at disqus.com. I only seem able to to login on via a comment form (such as this one). Am I missing something? Thanks.
  • Anton Kovalyov
Currently you can login at disqus.com with your OpenID url only if you used it earlier via Clickpass. We will roll this out for everybody soon but right now you can comment with your OpenID but not login at disqus.com.
  • tag
Thanks for the response, Anton. I'll look forward to being able to login again at disqus.com using OpenID.
  • Anton Kovalyov
Wait, were you using OpenID to login before this upgrade? If yes, let me know because you should be able to login with your OpenID URL.
  • tag
Anton, yes I've always used OpenID with disqus. I can login using this comment form, but I'm having problems with the disqus.com/login

A couple of screenshots show what I see: http://wordaligned.org/images/disqus-login.png http://wordaligned.org/images/disqus-login-error.png

    Thanks for your help.
  • Anton Kovalyov
That was me. So, again, sorry about that. That's definitely some kind of bug, I'll fix it tomorrow.
  • Anton, this is copy of the email I send to you but I see that it pertinent to the facebook/disqus mix-up.

When I am logged-in into my Facebook account, Disqus loges me into Facebook Connect automatically. This is not the behavior I want. I prefer to comment on Disqus with Discus account. Any recommendations?
  • Anton Kovalyov
That's how Facebook Connect supposed to work according to their policies. We don't hide login buttons if you are logged in using Facebook Connect so you can just click on the [D|Profile] button and login as a DISQUS user.
  • Got it, thanks, Anton.
  • Anton Kovalyov
I'll check and fix it tomorrow.
  • What openid provider are you using?

    Giannii, I'm using phpMyID http://siege.org/projects/phpMyID
I followed Sam Ruby's tutorial http://www.intertwingly.net/blog/2007/01/03/OpenID-for-non-SuperUsers to install this as a standalone server on my site.

    Great!
I hope you support Y!(US) Y!(Japan) and Google OpenID login button, so that it will be more user-friendly.
Plus, if you require display name and avatar "after" logged in, it will be better ;)
  • Anton Kovalyov
Right now there is a generic openid implementation. But stay tuned, all those tweaks are going to be out soon.

    Cool!
  • This is awesome.
  • Just.
    Great!
  • Good job!! I just applied my blog comment system of disqus. :)
  • Awesome! I just stopped by to see if there was any progress on OpenID and sure enough, here it is. Thank you
  • Great!
  • Sweet !
  • Good.
  • Testing this disqus commenting system.
