Blacklisting & Some Extras

We’ve rolled out a couple more updates, check them out!

Blacklisting

Previously, backlisting a commenter would place his or her comment in the “Unapproved” pile. We’ve learned that this behavior may not be the best way. When you, the moderator, blacklist someone, you really want them gone! We’ve made an update: commenters who are blacklisted will no longer be able to comment at all. They will receive this message:

As before, you can blacklist commenters by clicking “More” on individual comments, or right here here: http://disqus.com/admin/permissions

“Facebook User” Fix

Has this happened to you before? After you connect with Facebook and post a comment, does your name and picture not correctly show up?

It’s caused by a privacy setting in your Facebook settings. You may wish to update your privacy settings to allow Disqus to pull the right information.

Cheers,

Giannii

  • Thank you for this helpful information. I can use this to block users if I want to and if it is reasonable to do so. Thanks again!

    Mr. Macone:

Are you the moderator? If so, would you really do this being in your position as an editor of a newspaper and transcending all sense of open discussion and debate? Over what?????

As you noted on the blocked words - users who were banned but then removed from the blacklist are also reappearing on the list.

  • Hey Damon,

The record is available on the permissions page and we're working on expanding the explanation of the "blocked messages" right now.

We were just talking about this yesterday. We'll keep you updated.
  • Yup, all of that is in your permissions page.
  • Can we also un-block blacklisted commenters?
  • Hi, interesting post. I have been thinking about this topic,so thanks for posting. I'll probably be coming back to your posts. Keep up the good posts
  • Since 'blacklisting' is a full ban now - we need some record of why the user was banned and/or a copy of the comment that resulted in the blacklisting.

We have been getting emails and calls all week from people who we apparently blocked months ago - wondering why now they are seeing this message. Since we have no record of the original infraction we have nothing to tell them. In many cases we need to now un-block them until they re-offend so we can then put them back on the blacklist with a clear explanation of why.

    Thanks
