Upgraded! Interface and Performance

We just released a significant update to the Disqus comment system that is now live on everyone’s website. Most of the major changes are behind the scenes, but there are two areas that you will notice immediately.

Performance

The comment system was rewritten to render quicker and more reliably across all browsers. We did some heavy testing here in the Disqus labs and here are our results:

  • Internet Explorer is up to 5x faster
  • FireFox is up to 3x faster
  • Webkit (Safari and Chrome), and Opera is up to 2x faster

These results are only some of the advantages of our improvements. We’re very excited to show off new functionality that will come from this upgrade. More details soon.

Interface

We made some interface changes that will affect your sites. Check out our interface guide on the Disqus Wiki for full details.

Here is the short list:

  • Voting arrows has been replaced with “Like.” You can now “Like” comments, giving the commenter a positive reputation point on Disqus and helping other readers discover great comments.
  • The More Menu is a new addition that brings up numerous options, such as reblogging. Moderators will find all the admin controls there as well, including removing comments and blocking options.
  • The Media Menu is where you will find the video comments toggle if you have this enabled. As we release more media functionality, they will be found here.

So what do you have to do?

How to upgrade

If you are using Disqus on a WordPress blog, go to your plugins page to update or download the new plugin. For all other platforms, this upgrade is automatic.

As with every new release, we’re paying very close attention to your feedback. Let us know what you think in the comments.

UPDATE: You should now be able to see an update box for you plugin if you’re using Wordpress. This was a fix for users not being notified of the update.  -Giannii

    These upgrades though small are awesome. I like the fact that you did away with the arrows. I remember when I first saw DISQUS I wasn't sure what they meant.

    Next try getting rid of the avatar popups so that I don't have to constantly watch where I'm putting my mouse. ;-)
  • We'll have a new update that addresses this pretty soon.

    Thanks for the update guys. I am going to install it now.

    Would be really nice if you could use some time on making the plugin produce valid HTML
  • way to go on the performance upgrade guys! very cool. For us JS/HTML hackers out there, any interesting lessons learned in what's slow/what's fast?
  • Yes definitely. It may serve as a good blog post sometime in the near future. Thanks for the idea.
  • Very impressive changes Daniel, your team is incredible. Disqus makes Blogger usable, and the Facebook integration seems to be more solid. Great work guys!!
  • Does this new version change anything in the API?
  • All existing API methods are still live. How come?
  • I just asked because I am working on a plugin to use Disqus via the API to use with modx cms and was wondering if anything had changed with this new release.
  • How, if at all, does this affect the XD receiver fix?
  • I was using the workaround offered here at Disqus blog before I updated my WordPress plugin, unfortunately it doesn't seem to work for me any more. Still causing the same statistics mess.

    I've checked the plugin and I think I've found what is wrong with it;

    Disqus plugin tells Facebook Connect to look for the xd_receiver.htm at the Disqus plugin directory with the variable facebookXdReceiverPath. Problem is, Disqus plugin doesn’t ship with the xd_receiver.htm, and that’s why Facebook Connect’s attempts to reach this file are returning with errors, and causing statistics mess.

    So, I've moved my prevously uploaded "xd_receiver.html" to the Disqus plugin directory (to /wp-content/plugins/disqus-comment-system), and renamed it to "xd_receiver.htm" and problem solved.

    Now it's working flawlessly.
  • Thanks Ali. We'll make sure that the plugin is packaged correctly with the xd_receiver.
  • You're welcome, glad it helped.
  • Thanks a lot! The one question for usability: why the word Report remains after my voting? Like • Report could turn into You liked this • 4 people liked, too.
  • The Report option isn't an exact counter to Like. If someone likes a comment, the option to raise awareness to the moderator (for any reason) should remain.

    I do understand that some of that may seem counter-intuitive, and I'll pay attention to how people use this.
  • I mean for me only – and for every user after voting by himself only. Others would still Report, of course.

    The same under my comment – what the reason to Report own response?

  • And what the Community Page means? Could I translate it as Council, Discussion board, Disqus page to my language version?
  • Nice work guys! I'm getting ready to give the update a go now on SheGeeks.net.

    Definitely loving the speed update. With so many plugins running on my site now, performance is becoming a growing priority.
  • Fantastic update you guys! I can tell the difference in speed immediately and substantially on Firefox Mac / Wordpress 2.7.1. The layout and interface is a big improvement--I have literally never seen up/down arrows used on my site so hopefully "Liking" catches on.

    I really hope the "Use Media" dropdown starts adding things other options such as embedded images, YouTube videos, Polldaddy polls, etc--that would make things just about perfect.
  • It's on the way =)

    On my theme's dark background the new sign on text labels are in invisible

    I tried to add this to my CCS file
    #dsq-content #dsq-label {
    color:#999;
    }

    #dsq-content #dsq-form-text-label {
    color:#999;
    }

    It didn't change the text

    Please advice?
