A small note regarding Facebook Connect

Our new implementation of Facebook Connect was released on Friday. It’s experimental and may temporarily cause website statistics (Google Ana., Mint, Clicky, etc.) to have been skewed. We’re working on addressing this issue with Facebook and apologize for any inconvenience.

    hello....
  • rpbart6196
brand new to disqus and trying to add facebook connect. Directions on this page http://wiki.disqus.net/FacebookConnectHelp say that I should paste a Facebook API key in on the settings page of my admin account, but I don't see a field for the API key.

Are the instructions on this page correct http://wiki.disqus.net/FacebookConnectHelp or what am I missing?

    Thanks.
  • I saw the same issue... Try clearing your cache or using a different browser. The input box should appear again.
  • rpbart6196
I used Safari instead of Firefox and that solved the issue. Thanks.

So far I must say I am ridiculously impressed, way to go. I did, however, notice some seriously slow load-times when a) signing into Facebook Connect on my site, www.TerraCurve.com, as well as the time it takes between posting the comment and then being asked via a popup window whether or not to post to my Facebook profile. Are these known issues?

  • Hiya Joe,

I did a couple of tests on your site and found that Disqus loads in 1.53
seconds. The totally load time on your site is roughly (without Disqus) 20
seconds. It may seem like Disqus is taking the longest to load but it's
usually the last item to load.

Regarding the post to profile how long does it usually take to load on your
    end?

    Cheers,

    Giannii

  • Hi Giannii,

Thank you so much for looking into this! The issue I have found is not with the initial loading of Disqus. That is, as you have pointed out, very fast. What I am finding is that, after logging in via Facebook Connect, the actual features (Facebook username, profile phot, etc.), take a long time to load, while the actual comment box is already present on the page.

Then, after submitting the comment while logged into my Facebook profile, I am not prompted to include the comment on my Facebook profile until a good 10-15 seconds later.

Also, once posted on my Facebook profile, it merely states that I commented on the site, NOT the actual comment. For instance, instead of actually quoting my comment on y Facebook profile, it will read something like "Joe Ascanio left a comment on Terracurve.com" and then not say what the actual comment is. Is this normal?

Thank you! Again, I am thrilled with the functionality; I would just liek to wrap my brain around some of these details.
  • I would also love to see the multi-line postback option enabled. Seeing a part of the comment would make this already impressive implementation even better!
  • Hi, i just set up disqus and facebook connect to work with my blog on tumblr. Currently people can comment on my blog with there facebook id, but i was under the impression that info would be sent back to facebook to appear on my news feed. is that correct? how does fb connect interact with your website?
  • replied to your other post.

Hey guys, I am pretty excited and glad you've made the updates! I noticed though that when I was logged out of all my accounts (WP, Disqus, FB) when I went to leave a comment, I saw no FB Connect login option. I was trying to test out the FB functionality, but didn't see a way to login via the graphical button like I saw on this site.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Joe

  • Thereis a FBConnect button on the top. (if the site owner enabled it) Logout
and you should see it here.

Hmm, I logged out of everything and cleared my cache and authenticated
sessions. I still do not see the FB connect login button on my site, but it
had previously been working. In addition, when I am logged in to FB, I can
see the dialog box at the top right of the screen. I do see the Disqus login button (when not logged in to Disqus) on the top of the comments box on my site.

I do see the FB login button at the top of the comments box on your page,
    but not mine. Odd.

Edit: I also just realized that I don't see the FB connect box on the disqus.com site. I put a screen shot of what it looks like here http://joeflasher.com/wordpress/wp-content/gall...

    Thanks!

Ok, you can disregard my previous comments! It turns out I had a Facebook Connect plugin installed that was causing a lot of issues. I am not sure where it came from, I had checked before to make sure there wasn't anything like that. Oh, well, so it goes.

Anyways, it looks good! I would also echo a previous commenter that having a summary of the comment show up on FB would be nice.

Thanks for all the work guys, this looks nice!
  • How do I know if I'm using the new FaceBook implementation on my site (or is this something that automatically happens)? Giannii, I'm the guy who reported the problem with FB icons in the sidebar widget. One other thing I noticed is that it takes awhile for a comment to appear in the sidebar widget. Is this part of what you guys are looking into? Not sure what 'normal' is supposed to be for this.

Thanks and keep up the great work. The FaceBook integration with Disqus really adds tremendous value to this service.

Hmm... On my site, after I log on with FConnect, I do not get an option to leave a comment immediately. Instead, I still see the "login" to post a comment text. I was hoping that I was not the only person with this issue.

For instance, I can log in with FConnect and see my avatar... Unfortunately it seems I have to create a disqus account also to post and they are in no way related.

  • This is really exciting. Jascanio, we are working on improving performance of Connect- we've made a lot of progress already and I think we'll see more improvements going forward.
