Preview our next big features exclusively on Mashable

We’re big believers in the power of the comments to overtake the blog post. Content may be king, but with a great audience, it is only the first voice in the conversation to follow.

Mashable, a leading blog that covers social media and web technology, is a good example of this. Their daily blog posts are bookmarked, tweeted, and commented on numerous social services around the web. Disqus now powers Mashable’s comment system, the same lovable comment system you’ve grown to love, but with a couple key additions that you may want to check out. We’ve been working with Mashable and UberVU, a new conversation tracker, to deliver these “social media reactions” back to the readers right on Mashable.

So what does this mean?

If Mashable’s posts are discussed on Twitter or Digg, those tweets and comments will appear in their Disqus powered comment system. Other supported services include Flickr, FriendFeed, YouTube, and many more.

Tweet your comments

Now, you can also retweet your comments to Twitter. Enter your twitter details on the Account Services Page and check Retweet this comment when posting.

We’re testing this and a couple new features exclusively on Mashable for the next couple weeks, so keep your eyes peeled. Once we’re ready for everyone, we’ll announce all the dirty details.

You can read more about this by heading to Mashable for their take.

I can't seem to post on San Diego Union Tribune site.
    Comments are being blocked.
Can't get help to find out what the reason is.
  • Thumbs up for the feature. I will be returning for more insights once in a while. Kudos

  • Just finished taking a look some of the posts on Mashable. Oh my goodness, this is really hot! I love it this social mentions feature. It truly ties the web together for bloggers in a way that goes far beyond the trackback.

Hat tip to Mashable, Disqus, and UberVu for putting this together.

    hi
  • I love where you guys are going with this and I can't wait for it to go public.
I do want to request an enhancement as well though. I would like to see that at some point a post might be related to a twitter #tag conversation and I would want all associated #tag conversations to go into the blog post as well.
I think that this is definitely useful and have had instances in the past. #tags help keep interaction with the conversation simple on twitter by being able to use tools already developed for it. By being able to use twitter toolsets to have a more in-depth discussion associated with the initial blog post and having those conversations logged back in the initial blog post, it keep the context on what people have talked about and how those conversations have evolved. It also proves to be useful in being able to go back and look at logs of conversations that were discussed on twitter that might otherwise be lost.
Let me know if you all decide to implement this, otherwise I might look into doing it myself.
Thanks and keep up the good work.
  • This is really superb, can i install this feature on my squidoo lens?
  • this is awesome. you guys continue to impress.
  • We just went live with it over at the San Diego Union Tribune. I hope we don't hit disqus too hard with traffic! It seems to be handling our traffic well and during our first day we had over 700 comments.

    nice feature

This is a brilliant idea! I can't wait to see it in action. Any ideas on how long it will be before the rest of us can take advantage of this feature?
  • i might need a personal lesson from giannii :)
  • Cool feature, but if I can make a suggestion, collapse the trackback and social media comments by default. Makes for a much better layout and relieves the load.

The new look of Disqus is also super-swanky.
  • Awesome work guys! Can't wait to install this on my blog once its available!
  • i just switched over from intense debate, i love the potential of the seesmic video comment feature
  • Welcome to the DISQUS Family! ;)

    We disqus, not debate :p
joke joke ^_^ (I like debates)
  • Awe man, I installed Disqus on the GoMediaZine and was dissapointed that I didn't have the TweetBacks and the ReTweet this Comment option. But I'm glad to see why now. I can't wait until this is released!
  • Wow! Mashable! Disqus is the best! :-)
  • Nice work as always Daniel. Can't wait to use this on mediabistro.com.
  • Awesome work, looking forward to this rolling out to all users soon. You can slowly see the pieces of the social web coming together.

  • QE likes this.
  • This is killer...recently switched to Disqus, there's no denying you guys and your innovation!! Good work!
  • this is killer. have you guys thought about making an add-on for vbulletin? i'm a big believer in forums and think they will continue evolving to be a place where passionate online communities are created around content. as vbulletin is the leading visible source forum content management system, i think creating an app for the vbulletin ecosystem would be a great way for you guys to get into the forum space.

i use vbulletin so if you ever wanted to pursue this project and had any questions about vbulletin or anything i can help you out with on that front feel free to contact me at any time.

    keep up the great work.
  • At the risk of sounding a little dull, are you saying that all of those social services integrate Disqus? Or are you saying that there is a tracking mechanism that tracks comments posted on those services without them actually running Disqus?
  • They're not, as I understood it, uberVU developed a system to collect all "entries" related to a particular URL. Then DISQUS and uberVU joined forces to bring the idea to the next step.

So now, we have uberVU - "bringing back the comments to where they belong" and DISQUS - "track your comments, track replies, one comment-identity across thousands of websites" together.

  • great!
  • Hey, that's my comment in the screenshot! SWEET! ^_^
  • SWEET! I can't wait until this is rolled out to the masses!

I love Disqus, and it's only getting better!
  • I like the idea of uniting all relevant conversation under one page, and moreover, hooking everything back to the author of the content. It's going to be a boon for bloggers looking for feedback without having to roam through connected networks.

After looking through some Mashable pages, I do have one qualm about this feature : all or most retweets are the same. I hope there's going to be a way to filter identical retweets or bookmarks. In any case, good work, and it's nice to see what you guys have been up to!
  • Yep, "Re-tweets", "re-plurk", and all other "re-" should be collapsible or something. It now comes to filtering out 'entries' with real 'content'.

But it is a good start nonetheless, let's hope they find a solution to that before rolling it out in the public ;) "First-impression" lasts. We want that first impression to be more positive experiences than negatives :p
  • Very cool. If you guys could integrate pulling in related tweets, facebook links, and that sort of information for articles you'd be so much closer to world domination.
  • vladimiroane
Thanks for the suggestion. Soon enough!
  • I choose Disqus over the other comment management systems. Hearing about these new features reassures me that I made the right choice!
  • Same here! :)
  • Interesting! Thanks Mashable! Looking forward to using Disqus! :)
  • I cannot wait to install this feature on my Disqus enabled blog. brilliant
  • Awesome work! Very tight integration, glad Mashable is using Disqus! Just wanted to hop over and say congrats real quick.... congrats!
