No-Follow Enabled On Disqus WordPress Plugin v2.04

As some of you know, we’ve been receiving a good amount of spam from SEO rank climbers over the past couple weeks.

Who are these people and why are they doing this?

The acronym “SEO” in our case refers to “search engine optimizers,” a term adopted by an industry of consultants who carry out optimization projects on behalf of clients, and by employees who perform SEO services to gain a better ranking in search engines.

Unfortunately, we have been dealing with the more malicious users versus the kind legitimate type.

To help decrease this type of spam within our system we’ve added “nofollow” to our WordPress Plugin. This is a minor update but it is very essential. We apologize for the tardiness of this release and assure you that we are constantly working to improve Disqus. We will be having a bigger release in the next couple weeks, so keep your eyes peeled!

Download WordPress Disqus Plugin v2.04
UPDATE: 2.04.3996 was released due to a bug in 2.04.3953.

You go boy! This is what you were talking to me about the other night. Bad SEO!!!!
  • My suggestion would be an ability to give the Disqus-enabled site owner the choice to enable and disable "no-follow" via the Settings tab.
  • This is a great--long awaited--release. Great job.
  • i agree, this hurts legitimate commenters more than hurting spammers. I'm not ready to ditch disqus yet. But would really like to see better action taken. Can't disqus tie into Akismet?

Also, this latest plugin is only tested to wordpress 2.6.1? I hope this is a typo in the release and disqus means 2.7.1 (the latest)

Finally, wondering if disqus had a chance to fix track backs on wordpress. I spoke to a developer a few times about it and i'm more than happy to help and let disqus use my blog as a test-bed.

    thanks!
  • Sorry, but that's just not good enough. All No Follow does is stop Google and others from following a link during indexing, but it does absolutely nothing to stop the spammers from leaving comments, does nothing to get the "search climbers" off disqus, and does nothing to solve the problem.

It solves the goal, but a spammer doesn't care if No Follow is on or in effect because they're not checking. They won't benefit in the long run, but that won't stop them from spamming the hell out of your blog in the first place.

Secondly, turning on No Follow only hurts legitimate linkers and commenters who give linky love to their posts or to other posts. In other words, the net effect is an ineffective spam stopper that hurts legitimate users who should benefit from followed links.

You guys really need to get your heads on straight and fix the spam issues. So far I see a lot of ancillary stuff and a lot of fixes for things that aren't at the heart of the problem (including Facebook connect? Come on!).

I liked disqus a lot in the time I had it installed (I even would've paid for a premium version if it were offered!), but at the rate you guys are going, I'm quite glad it's gone. Your non-reaction to a huge problem has convinced me that I'm better off keeping control of my comments in my hands on my server with Akismet which, incidentally, is catching the spam that Disqus was letting through.

  • No one claimed that this was the stopper for SEO spam. We've seen a lot of spammers selling list of sites that don't use nofollow, and this update addresses that.

We've done a lot to address spam from many angles, many of which is not viewable to you as a user. Calling this non-reaction is absolutely untrue.

What's ancillary about evolving the product? Spammers are prolific and persistent; should we sit idle while we wait for their next technique? I personally do not think so. Your last statement is a bit amusing because Disqus tapped into Akismet for some of the filtering (it no longer serves as a complete solution for us either).

    Appreciate the thoughts though, Vinny.
  • Gregory,

2.04 is the version for our Disqus Comment Plugin not the version of the WordPress plugin. Our plugin works fully with Wordpress 2.7.1. =)

Can you forward me the emails regarding the trackbacks?

    Cheers,

Maybe I spoke too soon over here. I updated the plug-in and now it highlights the first half of all my posts with a hyperlink to the disqus comments section. I've had to deactivate the plug-in until I find a solution. Not cool.
  • Sorry for the inconvenience. I am releasing a fix, and it will be available shortly.
  • TheBlackCritic
No problem. I really like disqus a lot and was just disappointed to see the update mess up the site. I was thinking I could manage a quick fix--since I noticed it forced a disqus hyperlink from beginning of post to the first external hyperlink in the post. But I couldn't find a solution. So I will await the update and fix...and reactivate it then. Thank you. Good to see you are aware of it and on top of it. Great job.
  • Thanks for waiting. 3.04.3996 is now available from http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/disqus-comm....
  • Actually, it is an effort nonetheless. From what I've read elsewhere, and I see the logic of the argument, bots are farming sites with comments feature. They'll try it at first and check if there is a no-follow, if it is positive, they mark it and skip it next time. If there is no no-follow, then they'll spread the news around.

That, IMO, will lessen the spammers who are after the no no-follow sites with comments. Addressing the other type of spammers requires another approach. For example, people who were hired to spam, are more challenging to combat than the bot-spammers ;) And these type of spammers are getting more and more ingenious and creative.

    My two cents
  • great community
  • great! thanks!!
  • Can you make another version for Blogger with options to turn on/off nofollow and target in links? Thank you very much.

  • The "nofollow " only used in google. So to avoid SEO, please use direct link to real link.
  • Thank you.
  • I think this is a positive move. I haven't seen a lot of spam come through disqus since installing it but I have been getting spam in wordpress somehow around disqus. I can't figure out how they are doing it or why (since the comments do not show on the site) but I keep getting spam in wordpress db that is not in disqus. I don't know how its getting posted. My only thought is that they are posting it in disqus, its syncing to wordpress, the getting removed by disqus' anti spam measures and somehow left in wordpress. Either that or there is some backway to post a comment to wordpress even when disqus is installed...?

  • This is the story of spammers, instead of allowing for legitimate commenters to be rewarded accordingly. These unscrupulous spam mongering buffoons destroy valid plausible opportunities for many people. For what, this is what I want to know.

It would seem to combat spam we should penalize those who initiate it. Not with 30 days jail time, or house arrest or whatever. 1st time conviction, $1,000,000.00 or 5 years in jail. 2nt time 5,000,000 and 5 years in jail. Of course there would have to be a baseline acceptable for this degree of penalty, overwhelming evidence, etc. etc. You can't just run around passing out penalties of that magnitude on small offenders, or people who broke the law out of ignorance.

The point is, until stronger stances are made there will be no fear, no fear of loss, no fear of death, these might be the most common characteristics in criminals. If we cannot instill fear, than creating solutions for the symptoms is the our solution.

Yes I did use "unscrupulous spam mongering buffoons" , it took on a life of it's own, I considered "unscrupulous spam mongering troglodytes"....haha
