Howto: Mark Spam

Tonight we implemented our some new spam moderation functions and this is how it works.

  • Approve: Makes comment visible and confirms it is not spam.
  • Mark Spam: Alerts the spam system that the comment is spam.
  • Delete: Removes the comment without notifying the spam system.

Also if you receive comment notifications by email, you can email reply approve or spam.

It’s pretty easy and will help reduce the recent spam we have been experiencing.

  • Hi, when I get the email notifications I'm a bit confused about where to put "remove" or "approve" - I've been putting it on the first line of the reply, by itself. Would it work in the subject? What if there are other things in the message, like a signature? I wouldn't want to accidentally approve something - I'd prefer to have a link to click on, like:

click here to delete the message: http://magic/link/that/deletes/the/message
click here to approve the message: http://magic/link/that/deletes/the/message

Afterwards it would confirm the comment was deleted. With the email response system I have replied delete but I don't know if it worked or if I've just added a dumb comment like "delete" to my blog somewhere...
  • And the other question is, what if I start my sentence with 'delete'; if someone asked "how do I fix problem X" and the answer is "delete this file: ..." would that delete their message?
  • No, that would not.

The command is just the word and nothing else.

I look at the headings before I open spam mail..Also to warn people...Don't join CBS mailings list its very difficult to cancel this service...They never took me off their list ...Today I spam to death ...which they never check their own emails... Fair warnings ... I'm looking into a place handles theses kinds of companies who will handle this spam wars...
  • is it possible the change in spam filters has resulted in a bug that doesn't let me un-spam a comment? both Not Spam button and replying Approve don't seems to work for me (no result for mail, pressing button pops a dialog in Firefox telling about internal server error, but in Safari it has just "OK")

  • Hi Daniel, this isn't about Spam--
    Here's a comment from x-trends
Done. However, as you post on xTrends a lot, be prepared to get your points hammered. Some nerd with a lot of angst and too much time on their hands has written a web bot to point down virtually anyone who posts on xTrends. I wouldn't worry about the point system if I were you.

So Danial, Can folks really write this kind of a bot against your system?

  • Is it possible to un-spam a comment? I have feedbacks that comments from my readers aren't showing up. could this be due to spam catcher?

  • Hey guys, but what about banning altogether someone? I have got a spammer posting the same spam ad on the same article multiple times a day very day. I have got his IP and email, but even though I have included them in the moderation system all this does is to allow me to moderate it and mark it as spam. If I ten bots doing this at me daily I would probably be losing lots of time. Any suggestions or ideas?

  • Could you forward me the notification email of the user that is causing spam and I can take care of it for you.

  • The guy keeps pounding with no sign of stopping. If you have done something it doesn't seem to work on him. :-) Standing by for more news.

  • I have been having a major spam problem as of late on my blogs as well. Wish the spammers would just lay off.
