Announcing the Disqus API

I’m happy to announce that the first official release of our public API is now online. The methods provided are enough to let you write your own comment import tools, export tools, or even a custom Disqus plugin for your platform. Much thanks goes to our early adopters for helping us polish the documentation and identify the missing methods. With their help, the API has been steadily improving since the release of our Wordpress plugin.

We’re excited to see what people come up with. And of course, the Disqus API is still improving frequently, so let us know what could be better.

  • We're adding this to Feed.us asap.

  • I just move from instansedebate to disqus since its very easly to comment and the imporatant thing, its spam free!

    it's nice... great job
  • APIs are the bane of conventional business - keep the virtuous cycle going!
  • Congrats. I love where Disqus is heading.
  • This is OFF topic, sorry__
Gawd actual stock trading comments are 1 out of 10-20 comments.
Disqus really needs search engine ( yuch)
Takes 3 hours a day, to find 20 useful comments
I have an Idea, I'm off to see Daniel Ha—
Daniel, Can you write a search for 3 and 4 capital letters in a row?
Everyone lists stock tickers with Capital letters.
95% of all stock tickers contain 3 or 4 letters.
Do you see where I’m going with this?
For example, API and URL are used 7 or 8 times on this page.
If Disqus installed a simple search, then the list of blogs coming back for
URL or API would give back a list of software engineering blogs and comments
IBM, would give back a list of stock market blogs and comments
Quite simple, and look at the power.
Animal lovers could use CAT or DOG, and find horses ,tigers and zoo’s, and stock market blogs.
I didn’t say it would be perfect.
But it’s probably better than scrolling thru 19 useless comments, before finding one that’s useful.
  • yay !!

    congrats :-)

  • Great, thank you :-)

I just skimmed over the API a bit and have one question: Are there any plans to also allow changing of the URL of a thread? Might be interesting in case you move your blog to a different URL-scheme. Or is this handled internally?

  • Awesome!
  • Awesome!
  • Neat. Can I use this API to get a read-only copy of all the comments on my blog? I'm working on making my blog content available for offline viewing. I'd love to be able to include all the comments as well.

That is straightforward to do wordpress's built-in commenting system, since the comments are in my database. But with disqus, not so much.

    Great product, BTW.

  • Yep, you can do that with the API, or export them from the admin, or
    get them through your feed.

  • We are waiting the spanish versión! i can contribute
  • This is a pretty big concern, now that I think about it. Does Disqus and my WordPress blog stay synchronized? Or is that a manual operation?
It's scary to realize that an important part of my online business entity--my comment system--is completely dependent upon an outside vendor. I had reconciled myself to accepting the risks associated with that circumstance, and then this outage occurred.

  • It stays synchronized.
  • hey. i admin a few blogs. dont want to take this thread off topic but can you send me a message and explain why "drivenwide" is spammed in a lot of my blogs for completely unrelated reasons?
  • Might just be an ambitious spammer. The antispam will learn this over
time - sorry for the inconvenience.

    Great in API History :)
  • What I'd like to see is information at my account page about blogs that banned me. Right now, I suspect one blog using disqus banned me, but I'm not sure, it could be a technical issue instead. For better transparency, it is indispensable to inform a disqus user about such incidents, so that he doesn't have to waste time searching for browser problems that aren't real. Also, I'd like to have the option to disable my comment history being public. I care about my privacy and think this only aides and encourages stalkers. Thx for considering this.
