Looking to the Future of Discussion

When Disqus was started, the discussion in the blog comments was still a neglected part of publishing. Today, with the availability of Disqus and other comment-focused services, people are paying attention to what once was a thoroughly lackluster experience for both publishers and readers.

The Disqus team just came back from this past weekend’s Blogworld Expo in Las Vegas. We spoke to hundreds of bloggers and publishers who were excited about what we were doing, as well as met many existing Disqus fans. How people perceive the importance of blog discussion is changing quickly. When we first started Disqus, it was difficult to communicate to people how this service works — this was because there was nothing quite like it before. Now, we can see that the Disqus just makes sense to people when we talk about it to them.

Today, Automattic (the team behind the WordPress platform) announced their acquisition of IntenseDebate, a competing and similarly-focused comment service. From all of us at Disqus: congrats to the ID team on joining the Automattic family. We’re fans of WordPress here (this blog uses it), so I think it’s good that they’re beginning to pay more attention to the comments.

So what does this mean for us? The Disqus comment system is still the largest third-party comment system on WordPress, yet those blogs represent under 5% of all websites using Disqus. We pride ourselves on being an independent cross-platform service. Disqus will continue to innovate and provide the best discussion experience on blogs. Our company’s entire focus is on increasing the number and quality of your comments and that will never change.

As a true third-party system, Disqus can be open and extensible to other services and platforms, as well as offer unique functionality not limited by a single platform. I’m looking forward to the future of discussion and I hope you’ll experience it with Disqus.

  • I love disqus and will continue to use it. Hats off to a great team and superb responsiveness!
  • I have just got it installed! it's truly awesome!
  • Great job !
  • betclick
    yes, I'm agree with you
  • avrillavinge
u are to old to be on this site im 11
  • osa
I am 24. Is it old too ?
  • This was quite surprising to hear today. The one thing that jumped out at me right off the bat, was that ID, I'm assuming, will no longer be an open platform (in that it will no longer be available to non wordpress blogs). Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is a plus for disqus, if this is indeed the case. =P
  • sahil - ID has said it will remain open but that there will be more ties into wordpress.

Good job on the post Daniel - I planned to email you for comment but no need now!
  • websinthe
ID has said it will remain open and cross-platform in practically all it's releases on the topic.

The major benefit for them is direct access to askismet, gravatar and exposure to the entire wordpress community.
  • Oooh that's awesome, I guess next time I should read the press
releases all the way through. Thanks for the info though!

    you lok scary
  • DISQUS folks,
As I read the IntenseDebate/Automattic news I couldn't stop thinking about how this would affect you guys. The competition between 3rd party commenting services is a great thing. It means that all parties have to work their asses off to innovate, fix bugs, and LISTEN to the community. All three of which you guys are doing a great job of.

It will be important for all of these services to continually find ways to reach new audiences. Gary Vaynerchuck talked about building a personal brand at Web2.0expo in NYC and he said, "don't decide which services to use, use ALL of them". That is exactly the attitude I think you guys need to have. You have email down, I love how easy it is to contribute to a comment thread via email but what about if I want to use Friendfeed or FB or [ other service here ]? And that is just limiting the scope to text responses.

The Seesmic integration early was an awesome innovation. Now what about Jott? If I don't have access to my laptop but want to contribute to a text conversation how do I do it? What if I could vocally call in my comment or response? The web is increasingly MOBILE and increasingly LIVE. Keep those themes in mind and you'll be headed in the right direction.

    Keep it up!

  • Well played, Daniel.

Plenty of room in the space, and the first exit is usually a very good indication of a worthwhile market. You should feel good.

  • Interesting. The integration between WP and DISQUS is pretty good. I am curious to see how well ID integrates with self-hosted WP. I can imagine the wordpress.com hosted blogs can benefit from this.

    Keep it up, my dudes.
  • P.S. Daniel, did you see how I hacked in the Disqus comment for for our image posts?

  • daniel and team disqus, quick question:
do you know if that will mean that my disqus set up on my own wordpress blog will break in the future? can we still use disqus on wordpress? will u still provide you plugins?

  • Good to see Disqus remain independent and/or hold for a bigger payout. You guys are awesome. Comments on blogs have sucked for a long time now and with Disqus the conversation is finally getting meaningful again.

(I always stick in my dashboard hehe)
  • Disqus will certainly continue to give WordPress full support.

  • And besides, I highly doubt existing Disqus-powered Wordpress blogs and sites will move to IntenseDebate even if Wordpress forces them to. Maybe < 1% will do, but still, I doubt it. IMO, there is no competition between the two.

What is important here is "CHOICE". What Automattic did is simply to buy a comment-defragmentation service than to build their own. There is just no point creating one from scratch if you can buy out there.

I'm not a Wordpress and Akismet user, but even if I am, I will still stick with Disqus. And even if I am a new blogger using Wordpress with ID, I'll still choose Disqus. I'm serious :p

  • We're not worried. I think it's important that platforms have a strong
discussion focus in their core offering. As a service entirely focused
on it, we will continue to offer unique benefits that bloggers will
find worth the upgrade to Disqus.

That said, thank you much for the support John. Cheers.
  • Hi Daniel,

I just started using Disqus on my blog at http://ericlee.us. Now, I did sign up for the ID private beta (full disclosure), but I did so in order to compare your service to theirs. I want to see which one I like the best. I really, really enjoy using Disqus and I don't see myself switching right away (if at all).

I just wanted to chime in and tell you guys that you are doing a great job, and keep up the good work!
  • I was using disqus for commenting and now am moving over to ID to try that out. I like what I've seen here, but I've also like what I've seen here as well. I think the biggest thing for me is to have users get replies via email without having to sign up. That doesn't seem to be an option. If someone could work that out, that would be dope.

I think a lot of folks are hesitant to sign up for something else, but keep up the good work. Still testing out both on my little blog.
