Downtime

5:25 pm: Disqus is currently experiencing downtime due to a problem affecting all customers at our host. We are working hard to fix it and I’m sure they are too. If you are using our Wordpress plugin, your site should automatically revert to builtin comments. I will post updates here as we have them.

Update 5:35 pm: The issues at our host seem to be resolved. We are continuing to investigate the situation and preparing ways to respond to similar events in the future. We apologize to everyone for the interruption of service.

Update 5:50 pm: What happened is that a server room went offline at our host, and when it came back up all internal networks were disabled. More details as they emerge.

  • Backend processes need to be managed constantly. This may lead to a serious problem because many sites depend on disqus for commenting. Hope it is a good lesson learnt.
  • The systems' kind of robust here. Good job in maintaining it.
  • You managed to get it up in 25 minutes. Real commitment.
  • Have you found any solutions that will prevent this from occurring in the future?
  • someone commented on my blog post through Disqus and I received notification via email (from wordpress), but their comment is not visible on my blog AND it is not on my Disqus account!

Please investigate and let me know what is wrong. I know the person who commented, so I will ask him to go back and comment in the usual way, without using Disqus.

  • This is a pretty big concern, now that I think about it. Does Disqus and my WordPress blog stay synchronized? Or is that a manual operation?

It's scary to realize that an important part of my online business entity--my comment system--is completely dependent upon an outside vendor. I had reconciled myself to accepting the risks associated with that circumstance, and then this outage occurred.

I'm paying attention to this as I assess whether or not the benefits of your service outweigh the real-world-demonstrated risks.

Thank you for your transparency on this issue. I would have appreciated an email or alert or something telling me the system was down. I'm now following you on twitter, so maybe that will help.
  • It's a huge concern, Devin, and we know it.

Does Disqus and my WordPress blog stay synchronized? Or is that a manual operation?

This is automatic once you've finished the install process.

We are increasingly making Disqus a risk-free service to try. As with most hosted services (Gmail, blog platforms), you rely on us daily. We never forget that.
  • Daniel,

Thanks for the prompt reply. Great customer service! <twittering...>

So, to affirm what you've said, since I completed the install process, WP
comments and Disqus comments remain synchronized?

Such that, if Disqus is offline for whatever reason, people will still be
able to comment AND read comments on my blog?

If that's the case, I don't have much to worry about.

    Thanks.
  • Yup, this is the case.
  • I really hope to see a Disqus plugin for b2evolution similar to the new Wordpress plugin T_T. If only I know enough PHP *sigh*.

    this is a test
  • No doubt a system-wide new integration can be a challenge. I do hope you get all the wrinkles ironed out.

Also, please consider offering a guide for newbies that explains the account creation and meaning of the different settings.

    I thank you!
  • Absolutely on the way. :)

how often do outages happen? do you have some history
  • Yeah, the Disqus system hardly ever goes down. Nice job guys!
  • Max
    Thanks for the hard work!
  • Very efficient ! Solve the problem within a short time . Keep it up ! Great website.
  • Important thing is go into damage control mode and ensure that such thing do not happen again.
