New: Enable Support for Trackbacks in Disqus

Trackbacks? We haz it. I won’t waste your precious time — here’s how you enable it.

Go to the Configure tab and scroll down to General Settings. Check the box and let it do its thing. This is our support for standard Trackbacks. More fun Linkback implementations still to come.

And since this is such a short post, I’ll round it off with the latest Wallstrip episode which features Disqus.

I know — you came for feature news and you’re greeted with that mug. Sorry guys, but it is how it is.

  • what about disqus new version?
  • What about it?
  • They finally added trackbacks? Awesome! I've been waiting!!

Great news on the trackback feature... this is really an important feature
  • Would love trackbacks! My favorites are already full with URL's that I would like to have trackbacks for. Now disqus has it. My favorites folder shall be clean, neat and tidy once again!
  • Who is that guy in gray shirt? He's cute!
  • im getting loads of spam in my trackbacks on a wordpress blog, and marking them as spam, or banning the Ip adress in the comments doesnt stop more spam from arriving. Does ip/word filters bans apply to trackback or just to comments? If doenst aplly for trackbacks, it should. Take a look on the spam http://www.sanainside.com/2008/12/18/o-celular-perfeito/
  • Cool . Thanks for the guide and interesting video.

    test
  • When will we be able to send pingbacks to other blogs from Disqus?
  • I am sexier then @IgorTheTroll... that was a test. this isn't working very well on blogger. I can't comment
  • How do you mean?
  • Very nice! But 2 questions remain:

    - How to moderate incoming trackbacks? How can I e.g. get rid of my test trackback on http://www.felgner.ch/2008/07/378_site_overview_a_quick_guid.html#comments?

    - Is there a way to prevent the user from clicking the "(Trackback URL)" with the nasty error? Simple suggestion: Wouldn't a "Trackback URL: http://redfez.disqus.com/amp378_site_overview_a_quick_guide_for_first_time_visitors/trackback/" without using an be better than a link?

Now you need to enable "friendfeed" comments left on blog posts to show back up on the originating blog as comments or trackbacks. You could also add an optionthat allowed someone to CC their blog comment on friendfeed.
  • So then I guess this means that disqus isn't capturing trackbacks from posts in my own site. Oh wait, those were pingbacks. I guess they're not the same thing?
  • And don't forget about the "Linkbacks" that Google's Blogger uses
  • Pingbacks are a bit different. Here's a breakdown:

    http://codex.wordpress.org/Introduction_to_Blogging#Pingbacks
  • Is there no support for pingbacks?
  • Not just yet. It's coming.
  • On my blog the (Trackback URL) link sends me to a page with only the line, "1 Request must be POST." on it. What does that mean?

Thanks for all your help this week!
  • That is the trackback URL, not an actual trackback link.
  • Daniel, I know there are trackbacks out to a few of my new posts, but I still show the "1 Request must be POST" when I click the trackback link. Any thoughts? (http://www.dsimmer.com if you want to look at it.)
  • Hi Dean, that isn't a trackback link. It's just the trackback URL for
    others to ping.
  • thanks for the info
  • KansasGirl
    Chumps!
  • It's such a drag I didn't know about all these Wordpress.com limitations before. I've already mapped a domain name there, etc. Do you know if they are planning to support this in the future? What service would you recommend?
  • Hello - I don't know where else to ask this question, so... How can I get Disqus on my wordpress.COM blog. Is it possible? Thanks, Michelle
  • Unfortunately, Wordpress.com does not support modules such as Disqus
    at this time.
  • Awesome!
  • Gooooood !!!
  • Ok, Shey Smith and I have been testing this new trackback feature. You can find links to our WP article entries below. As far as we can tell, even with the custom trackback URL field set to the correct disqus article trackback URL (the one in parens), Disqus is not registering receiving the trackbacks. When the article is pinged through the normal trackback mechanism, the trackback shows up in WP comments and (if enabled) the Jangro trackback hack.

    http://www.sheysmith.com/2008/06/17/testing-disqus-trackbacks-vs-wordpress-trackbacks/

    Are we doing something wrong?
Is there a place on Disqus (like the community or thread page) we can go to see if trackbacks are actually being received?
Is there a trackback test mechanism we can use that is easier than writing an article with a link in it to a different article?
  • I'm having the same issue - none of the blogs that have linked to me at this URL:

    http://staynalive.com/articles/2008/06/19/developers-bailing-on-twitter/

are registering as trackbacks. Am I doing something wrong?
  • Hi Jesse, I think may be confusing trackbacks with pingbacks. Here is
an explanation on the differences: http://codex.wordpress.org/Introduction_to_Blogging#Managing_Comments

We should clarify this in our feature announcement. Thanks!
  • Any idea if you'll support pingbacks in the future?
  • We will. :)
  • We'll take a look asap. I'm not sure what the issue is right now.
  • Joe
Awesome job. Trackbacks are one of those small features that don't seem like a big deal but are really important for building community
  • That's true. Let's hope that this will bring back trackback-ing to the surface.
Those trackback-spams really killed this cool feature on many blogs - turning-off trackbacks altogether.
    Disqus can do a revival.
  • Nicki Brøchner
Finally .. sorry guys but there are just some functions that are pressing ;D ... Can't wait until I get 100% Disqused ;D
  • Daniel, does the Wordress implementation "eat" trackbacks like it does comments? Meaning, does it intercept and store trackbacks only in Disqus and not let them go into the wordpress database?

If so, then my trackback hack may remain useful to display old trackbacks.

Being on the API version of the plugin I don't have the new feature so I haven't been able to test it out just yet.
  • Yes, you're correct.
  • I implemented the trackback option on multiple blogs and none have displayed through Disqus. All are still hitting WP.
  • Are you pinging the right trackback URL? Disqus has a specific one.
  • It was other people linking to my posts in their posts, so that's why it didn't work.

Any plan for functionality to discover links in that way?
  • Yes, this would be pingbacks. We do have plans for this.
  • Yeah, I'm still showing both on my site, there's just to many old trackbacks to turn it off yet
  • Hmm. time to test on blogger/blogspot, you know, Google doesn't want trackback support lol (sarcasm to google meant)

    Edit:
Well as first suggestion... - the ability to place the trackback link above the comments (basic) or the ability to position the trackback link freely (advanced)
  • I enabled the trackback function and the title appears under my comments with a link (trackbacks).

I approved a trackback in wordpress comments section. When I click the trackback-link I end up on a page with this text on "1 Request must be POST. "

    What?
  • The WordPress trackbacks is not the same as the trackbacks in Disqus.
It sounds like you were clicking on the Trackback URL. This is not a
    Trackback link.
  • justinhamilton
Now you need to enable "friendfeed" comments left on blog posts to show back up on the originating blog as comments or trackbacks. You could also add an optionthat allowed someone to CC their blog comment on friendfeed.
  • In other words, I shouldn't go around messing with activating trackbacks for WP?
  • awesome! well done !!!
  • finally. 'nuff said.
  • The spiderman comment at the end was a nice addition to the interview. Good job my man.
  • Great Work Daniel! Thanks!
  • About time ... just kidding. So glad to see trackback support.
  • That was a great interview =) I was laughing out loud for real a lot.
  • About time guys! lol Thanks for putting in the hardwork and effort for trackbacks. WOO!
  • bbluesman
Good move Daniel. Keep up the excellent work!
  • Well, at least you aren't sticking your tongue out. :)
  • So, in WP do we need to adjust any of the settings regarding pingback and trackbacks? I notice that the trackbacks I already have aren't being picked up (they were with Jangro's hack, of course).
  • You shouldn't need to adjust any settings. I know of Jangro's hack but I'm not intimately familiar with it.
  • This is awesome! Thanks Daniel! Keep it up!
  • Nice work. Activated.
  • So you picked up Julie! Congrats!
  • RIGHT ON!!!

a real big thank you Daniel - and the rest of the growing team. You have made one loyal fan of Disqus very happy
  • congrats!
  • Thankyou. Excellent stuff.
  • Could I talk you into including an image example of how trackback looks in Disqus?

If it's like usual trackback, It'd be interesting to know if you're considering some sort of separate trackback and comments system - for instance showing comments by default, but including a button to show the trackbacks.
  • Today's release is for the standard, traditional trackbacks.
  • Yeah, that's pretty cool.
  • Nice!
  • Cool Daniel. I'll gladly retire my trackbackhack.
  • The new Disqus trackback feature doesn't pick up the old trackbacks -- so I'm still using yours.
  • Thanks for the hack. It's still applicable for the API version of the WordPress plugin until we release the new version.
  • Is there any way to import current trackbacks? Also is there a way do disable trackbacks for a particular post while still allowing comments?
  • Yessssssssssssss!

    (btw, good interview!)
  • Thanks! This is one of the big features I've been waiting for.
