Updated popup profiles: View recent comments and Twitter status

To bring up someone’s mini profile, you can hover your mouse cursor over his/her picture or name. The mini profiles were relatively incomplete when we released it, only serving to show other profiles and services that a commenter used or had on the web.

Our latest update adds a couple things that, together, should increase the mini profile’s usefulness factor by at least 68% (rough estimate). Bring up someone’s mini profile to view the last few things they’ve said across blogs using Disqus. If he added Twitter to his Disqus profile, you can view his current status as well.

  • Ha! I'd love to check out how the Twitter status thing is working, but I guess that depends on, ya know, Twitter itself not being all borked tonight. sigh. Good innovation though, thanks :)

Sweet, I'm still new here but adding tweets status has to be a good thing :)
  • Awesome work. I actually prefer my users to be commenting in an almost Facebook-dimension of the blog community. The more apps you bring into Disqus, the better. I'd like to never have to use Facebook and just center my community around my blog with the added dimension of Disqus. Freakin-sweet!
  • You guys just keep at it all day huh? I love this latest enhancement! Can we please add more services? Friendfeed, stumbleupon, mixx, digg?
  • Then it wouldn't be a "mini" profile any more, though... :)
  • Wow, nicely done! I like the recent status field too.. pulls from Twitter right? Excellent.

  • I love all the extra services you guys are adding but Daniel as I have expressed before I have serious concerns about the fact that I have no branding influence over your service and it feels like the more services you add the more you are disconnecting commentors (my audience) from my site.

  • I remember out chat. Let's continue talking about what we can do: daniel@disqus.com
  • Probably soon.
  • I don't know about anyone else, but I get really annoyed whenever that huge box pops up, obscuring what I was trying to read... and now it's even bigger. Please tell me there's a planned option to disable it altogether!
  • Probably soon.
  • Great post. Thanks for sharing.

Having the profiles pop-up just by mouse-over-ing them is bad enough -- having to then explicity close them by clicking a close button is a disaster. Please fix this!

  • I lean toward suggesting this also, but I'm willing to hear the other side of the argument (i.e. people who move their mouse away and still want the mini profile to be visible).
  • I think the best option here is to put a settings link on the mini-profiles to disable them on a per user basis. Something similar to what I saw yesterday on one of those annoying web snapshot things. It had the option to disable the boxes for one link or all links, this page or all pages, just for today or permanently. You could give them a register link in the settings (that opens in a new window please) and tell them that if they didn't want to register with Disqus that the settings would be cleared when their cookies were deleted. That *should* satisfy everyone and bring more users to Disqus.
  • I love this feature! It's the main reason I've started using Disqus on my new blog. Great work guys
  • It'd be great if there was a way to integrate Facebook statuses (or any RSS feed) into the "Status" instead of just Twitter (particularly given all of Twitter's troubles lately).
  • I really like Disqus and perhaps the only thing I don't like at all is the popup profile. I too would like to able to turn it off, or configure it so that the user can pull up the profile by clicking on a link, which to me is part of the standard web interface 101. It doesn't even seem possible to personalize the CSS to turn it off. Very disappointing. I had a user today saying on Twitter that the popup annoyed him so much he decided not to comment.
  • Agreed - I need to be able to turn the pop up off. I can't see whether people have a URL or not and every time I hover a user name, the popup goes on and won't come off.

I thought I saw super mini profiles that kind of drop down under the avatar image, but I can't find where to get that installed. Anyone know? It seems that with that version, the popup didn't come up. I see it being used on Inquisitr:

  • We are looking to make this an option to disable.

    Thanks!
  • Daniel that sounds fantastic. Thank You very much.

  • Foolish question...how do you integrate Discuss with services like facebook and twitter so they show up in your mini-profile. All I have are boxes to check for these services, but I see no where to input the usernames for these sites?
  • Nevermind I figured it out...just doesn't work in explorer...DUH!
