New commenting feature: Edit comments inline

You can now edit your comments inline on Disqus. Now you can freely edit those typos, bad links, and regretful name-calling before anyone really notices. Keep in mind that you will only be able to edit comments which haven’t received a reply yet. Otherwise, can you imagine the mess?

Fairly straightforward. Have fun.

  • Are you guys in my head or something? I was just wondering if I could and couldn't remember seeing an 'edit' link, but today I went and checked my blog and what do you know?! I can edit my replies. BRILLIANCE I TELL YA!
  • That is awesome, thaks!
  • Yay! I've been waiting for this feature ever since the day I tried to put an image tag into my comment.
  • Nice feature provided to the users. Editing is important especially if we have mentioned some statements that might create a big mess.
  • nice Daniel!

    I think Disqus is awesome!

I managed to set it up on my site and it looks great in IE.

However, I can't figure out why I can only see the "Disqus Comments" button on top when I click on comments and I can also see the "Options" button on bottom left when I use Firefox. The area where you put the comments in and the commenter's details aren't showing at all in Firefox.

I'm not sure if this is a plugin issue in firefox or a flash plugin issue. I know at the moment my computer cannot hear sounds at all when I play any youtube videos or flash videos. I can see the video clearly but not hear the audio. So, not really sure if this (flash) has something to do with it.

Can you please advise as to what I can do from here? By the way, my site is www.tradetosuccess.com

    Regards,
    Armand
  • Hi Armand. I'm using Firefox and I see everything OK. Which version of the browser are you using and on what OS?

Flash should have nothing to do with it.
  • Armand
    Hi Daniel,

    Gheez, you're quick!

I've got the latest version as well... version 2.0.0.13 and using Windows XP. I really have no idea why it isn't showing on my laptop... as long as you can see on yours then I know it's working for someone else...

Gotta figure it out... I tried refreshing and still no go... will try later on again...

    Thanks anyway Daniel... :)

    Awesome!
  • how do I delete a comment, not edit it? :-)

  • I have tried this a few times, and it seems buggy when used with code tags, part of the code disappear. I hope you will fix this :-)

  • This is now fixed.
  • The inline editing is buggy in two browsers that I've checked... 3 times I've edited a rather lengthy post and it truncated nearly the entire thing. Extremely frustrating and unrecoverable. Also, resizing the text box in Safari causes the containing DIV to scroll horizontal and vertical.

Aside from these small bugs, really like the system so far!
  • I haven't seen any of this, but I'll take a look.
  • That is great addition Daniel. I need to edit most of my comments! :)

I also have noticed that you recommend to install javasctipt plugin over the API version.

I just installed the javascript version on one of my blogs. But isn't the API version more beneficial as far as spiders are concerned?
  • You're correct about that. Once the new API plugin is released, you
can switch plugins without losing anything.
  • This is now fixed.

  • As a blog moderator, I would prefer to have a time limit for editing, say like 15 minutes. After that, I would want the comment to be frozen. Not all blog readers use the "reply" button when leaving a comment in reply, so only locking it when a reply happens isn't always a solution.
  • Does this only work for a comment at the end of a comment thread?

I have a comment in the middle of a series of comments that I want to edit, and there is no edit option.

There is only an option for the very last comment I made in that thread.
  • Makes sense - if I deleted a comment that received comments on one of my blogs, would it remove the responses?

I replied today via email and it included my email sig with contact info, which I would rather not have displayed.
  • No, but it will make a note that a comment was once there (but not
    from who).

Which comments display this info? We can take care of it: help@disqus.com

"c) The modification of a comment, as long as the original copy is still accessible and the edit is transparent"
    .
I take it that this is not possible, yet?

  • I like this feature because sometimes, people tend to type to fast and trigger happy. At least they can undo the damage.

With this edit features, we shall see less typo errors!
  • Duple Ang
Probably a "delete" feature should be added as well?

Although typo errors only affect the commenter's reputation, I believe it does affect Disqus's reputations as well. People will be complaining why can't we get it edited to make it look better? I guess that the writer would also wish to read an article in a flow!

I'm quite new to Disqus and I never know that the editing of comments are relatively new. I thought that its quite a must to have it. I realised that we are not allowed to delete our comments as well. This is quite a trouble to me as I might not we get it posted or I accidentally click on post it with undesirable comments and have no intention to repost another comment which is not true to myself.
  • jonaw
Probable a counter can be added to show how many times the person has edited instead of now allowing us to edit when there is a reply? As at times we might have realised the mistake after the replies.
