Mobile commenting

We ran into some small bugs with the reply-by-email feature this week. Most of it is fixed, but please bear with us as we knock out any issues that are still around.

On that note, Disqus is looking to make mobile commenting (ala the aforementioned feature) more powerful. We’re working on a couple ideas that should see the light of day soon. Does anyone out there have any thoughts around this that they’d like to throw on the wishlist?

  • I hope one day, different type of mobile brand and network carrier can communicate directly without any gateway. This will improve the mobile commenting experience.
  • I would like a mobile platform that is applicable to most cellphones. This will allows users with multiple phones to coordinate its commenting easily.
  • I love mobile
  • Great idea
I've a site talk about mobile and i'm very happy if you visit my site
  • 2) Scratch that, expect this in the same beta2 release. :)

  • My top feature request is a fairly significant change, so perhaps it's better for a later release. I love the Disqus tools on my site and on many of the Tumblrs / blogs I read. I also really like the dashboard / profile interface (including mobile). What really bugs me, and what's currently outside the scope of your product, is managing comments I make on sites that aren't powered by Disqus. I'd like a Disqus bookmarklet similar to the ones offered by Co.mments & CoComments that imports all my comments from across the web into the Disqus interface (including Wordpress / Typepad / etc comments). It's a pain having to track comments across different platforms.

    Two other relatively simple things:

    1) A profile field for my name and an option to display my real name (Joe Lazarus) instead of my user name (joelaz) when posting a comment.

    2) A "reply" link under each item in the dashboard instead of clicking "view" and then "reply" (saves me a click).

Looking forward to seeing what you guys are cooking up next.
  • I agree that we need to be addressing conversations outside of Disqus. We've been talking about a few things, but you're right -- it's a little ways off.

    1) You got it! *
    2) Ok, I'll see what we can do. **

    * imminent beta2
    ** maybe the following release

  • I've got a fairly big pile of things I'd like to see DisqUS do in a perfect world. Maybe this isn't the best place for all that.

But here's something fairly straight forward...

I've noticed a recurring theme that, if someone gives your competition a point over you, it generally has to do with the look and feel. However, thanks to full CSS styling functionality, DisqUS is capable of looking much nicer. If you were willing to accept "comment themes" to incorporate into production DisqUS, I'm sure plenty of your users would be happy to share their styles and help DisqUS look a little nicer out of the box. On top of that, if you throw in some templating functionality for advanced usage, there would be absolutely nothing, looks-wise, that DisqUS couldn't do.
  • Thanks for the thoughts. :)

The styling is being updated a bit, but it's still relatively neutral (intentionally). I understand your point though -- our system's back end was designed to take in user submitted themes, but we do not yet have a way for people to submit.

In the meantime, anyone that would like a little more control should check out the Custom CSS help.
  • I'm working on a Custom CSS that suits my Photoblog a little better
than I can manage with a few color changes. If it works out I'll
    share.

And I agree. Neutral is best by default. But, having a few
alternatives to choose from really helps. In the end, as you indicate,
it doesn't really matter. But, for some reason, people are attracted
    to it anyway. :)
