Beta opens up some more plus new changes

For the past couple weeks, we’ve been testing Disqus on a handful of blogs and websites — huge thanks to all of our testers! We’ve gotten some really good feedback and suggestions since. What we’ve received even more were requests from people itching to give Disqus a whirl themselves. If you emailed us about it, we’ll be contacting you soon if we haven’t already. Today, we are starting to take in more testers. If you’re interested, sign up on our front page.

We’ve also unrolled a number of changes, including an updated user interface for tracking your comments. Be sure to try out the new follow feature, which allows you to track any others’ posts as they make them. For site owners, check out the new moderate panel.

But bigger changes are afoot. Here’s what to expect very soon.

Notifications for when someone posts a comment or replies to your own
  • Migration support to import/export comments
  • Track comments, vote on comments without registering an account
  • Widgets for top and popular comments
  • Revamping of customization tools
  • New, full forum platform with skinning capabilities
  • Statistics and analytical tools for discussion posts
  • Open API for developers

Yup, we’ve been busy. We’re trying to get a more public release out sometime this next month; wish us luck. :)

Hello, World, for the second time

The Big Head Labs blog is now the official development blog for Disqus! The next post will detail some of the big changes, development-wise, going on with Disqus. We’re also physically moving from Cambridge, MA back to California — San Francisco, to be exact. It’s all happening this week, so we expect much hecticness.

Big Head Updates

We started this blog as a way to write about our journey as a startup. Posts were far too infrequent and I regret that. So this is what I’m going to do. I’m going to close this blog since this is our company domain and should point people to where the action is (or will be): Disqus.com.

We’ll open a Disqus blog to talk more about development and how everything is going. How are things going? Exhausting and awesome. Exhausome, one might say, though no one really would.

Y Combinator is wrapping up and we’re heading back to the Bay Area (moving up to San Francisco). We want to have a real beta test where we’ll start accepting more people in, very soon. This ideally should be in the next week but we’ve learned that the only true deadline is “when we’re ready.” However we set hard milestones for ourselves to make sure fast progress is made. I like the idea of releasing early and iterating, but when we open it up a bit more we have to make sure we can handle it (testing shows we are able to, which is great).

We’ve also been chatting with a number of nice folks interested in what we’re doing. It’s incredibly exhilarating to know that so many others can sense how big this will be. While I really enjoy them, I’m hoping these talks move along quickly so we can jump back into the world of development and bug fixes. It’s still moving along at a good pace, but since there’s only me and Jason right now, any time away slightly affects things.

All in all, it’s been a really good summer in Cambridge. I’ve done some great things, made some great friends, and am on an entirely new path. My next entry should be on our Disqus blog on the completely launched site.
